**We highly recommend pups stay on what the breeder is feeding to reduce stomach issues unless it’s a stray or pound pup then we recommend the above products. I have a blog post to keep you in the know about recalls on dog products, it’s a free site and a useful resource so check it out.
NOTE: We free feed here on the farm during the day then we pull the feeders between 6pm and 7am. It is highly recommended to get your fur child on a feeding schedule once you get them home.
VACCINATIONS
•Please see our blog post on VACCINATIONS. States vary on their requirements so once your pup is home schedule an appointment with their vet and establish care. Don’t FORGET your folder!!
PUPPIES ARE NOT IMMUNE
•Limit ground time in high traffic areas where lots of people and other animals are (dog parks, parks, vet office, apartment complex’s, gas stations, hotels, dog approved stores, etc) until fully vaccinated.
•Carry your puppy in and out of the vet’s office. Make sure Vet staff wears gloves and take something for your pup to sit on (towel, pad etc) carrying your pup in a crate is best practice.
•Don't allow them to come in contact with areas that maybe contaminated by other animals until they are fully vaccinated. Your home and their fenced yard should be safe if you know your homes history. Please let your breeder know if your residence has a history of PARVO so added prevention can be established.
•Remember Parvo lives everywhere and on unexpected objects and it only takes one lick and we all know Aussies are lickers so stay vigilant.
WORMING & HEART WORM Regimen
• Interceptor Plus prevents heartworm disease and treats and controls adult roundworm, hookworm, whipworm, and tapeworm infections in dogs and puppies 6 weeks or older and 2 pounds or greater.
COMBINATION Meds (Heartworm, worm, flea, Tick) for >8wks old
•Simparics Trio is given monthly to prevent heartworm disease. It also kills adult fleas, ticks, roundworm, and hookworm in dogs and puppies 8 weeks of age and older.
FLEA & TICK Prevention
*Puppies <6 months old
• Credelio kills adult fleas and is indicated for the treatment and prevention of flea infestations and treatment and control of tick infestations (lone star tick, American dog tick, black-legged tick, and brown dog tick) for one month in dogs and puppies 8 weeks and older and 4.4 pounds or greater.
*Puppies >6 months old
• Bravecto is a soft chew that is given every 12 weeks (Every 3 months). Bravecto kills adult fleas and is indicated for the treatment and prevention of flea infestations and the treatment and control of tick infestations (deer tick, black-legged tick, American dog tick, and brown dog tick) for 12 weeks (every 3 months). Bravecto also kills lone star ticks for 8 weeks.
***We have used the above medications on MDR1 Aussies w/no adverse effects. However, please note every Aussie is different and ALL heart worm medications increase the risk of neurological disorders***
•It is highly recommended that you test your Aussie to rule out MDR1 unless the breeder has already done so and educate yourself on safe meds. Please see my Blog post for the list on medications to avoid.
GROOMING
** If you choose to use a groomer please do not let them shave your dog!!! Trimming is fine, but shaving is not recommended for double coated dogs!! Find a groomer that knows how to care for an Aussie’s coat. Not trying to be ugly but if you don’t like hair look into another breed!! Aussies are hairy 👀
•Aussies have a double coat and shaving it ruins the under coat causing it to come back coarse. Aussies coats are water repellent, and heat/cold resistant.
•We recommend brushing once to twice a week. During heavy shedding season you may need to brush morel often.
•We highly recommend, a blow dryer they have them online via Chewys for < $80 bucks. It is extremely handy during heavy shedding season to blow out their coats and post bath drying.
•Brushes/combs: metal combs are a life saver, undercoat brush, and desheder are all must have items.
•Shampoos/Conditioners: any dog appropriate soap should be sufficient. However, we use Earthbath, NuVet Labs ,Cowboy Magic, and Wahl.
CRATE/POTTY Training
We highly recommend making a small area for your puppy and advance that area once pup has mastered potty training and can be trusted to not destroy things as they are going through the puppy stages. Please see our video on our Facebook OWNER site.
•Med-large Hard shell crates work best. If you are using a wire crate put a cover over it and make sure it’s NOT near walls and or furniture and it is best placed on a tile or concrete floor. ALL dogs need to be crate trained. It reduces stress during traveling, vet stays, illness, etc. PLEASE do your dog a favor and complete their crate training!! REMEMBER a puppy is like a human toddler!! Training and consistency is KEY!!
•We generally crate around 10-11pm here at the farm and we let them out around 7-7:30am and take out in between if they wake up crying. Expect your pup to cry 10-20mins some will even cry 30-45mins when crated in a strange place until they get use to the change. PLEASE NOTE: Your puppy will not be a crate expert at 8-12wks old and crate training can take 3-6months once home to master but consistency is key!!
CRATE IDEAS: Wear an old t-shirt and snuggle your puppy throughout the day and allow them to sleep with the t-shirt in their crate. Try placing crate in your room where they can see you and or in the farthest room in the house depending on their level of crying or not. Expect them to fuss for a wk or so... Also, Put a toy, their blanket, and a bone in the crate with them. NO heavy padded bedding as they get hot easily and will tear it up. During the day feed them in their crate and allow an open crate method so they know that's their new safe zone.
POTTY TRAINING
We start our pups on a pine pellet litter box as soon as their eyes open between 2-3wks old. Then at 6-7wks we start on the doggie door.
PLEASE NOTE: Your puppy will not be a potty expert at 8-12wks old and potty training can take 6months or longer to master but consistency is key!!
My rule is outside when they wake up and tell them “outside” each time. Followed by praising them when they potty.
Outside after eating.
Outside after drinking.
Outside after playing.
Outside after cuddle time.
Outside just because 😆
Generally our pups will go to the door and cry when they need to potty and will circle and sniff which is a dead give away potty time is fixing to happen if there is no doggie door available. If they are playing they may not make it to the door so be vigilant for the above cues.
Potty bells and or doggie door bells have become super useful in potty training as well.
Lots of information, advice, and resources!! It an adventure… new place, new things so hopefully in a week or so your puppy will have master their new environment. Congrats on your NEW Fur baby!! I pray this information is super useful and I am excited to be part of this exciting journey!!
